Jerome John Garcia was found
dead on Aug. 9, 1995, at 4:23 a.m. in his bed at the rehabilition center, Serenity Knolls. The cause of the dead was said to be a heart attack, according to the Marin County sherrif's office. Garcia had suffered from diabetes and general ill health for several years. He was also an admitted user of heroin and psychedelic drugs such as LSD. The funeral arrangements for Garcia are undecided at this time.
Garcia was 53 and had a wife,
Deborah Koons Garcia, a Marin county filmmaker, and four daughters: Heather, 32, Annabelle, 25, Teresa, 21 and Keelin, 6. Jerome John Garcia, better known as "Jimmy", was born in San Francisco on Aug. 1, 1942. The Warlocks rock group was formed by Garcia in 1964. The name was later changed to the Grateful Dead in 1966. The group combined rock, bulegrass, blues and folk influences. Garcia was the lead guitarist. They had many line- up changes, but they still had millions of devoted fans. Many of their songs include "
Truckin'," "
Casey Jones," and "
Friend of the Devil." Their only top 10 hit was the 1987 song "
Touch of Grey."
